Description

Aqua's Aquarium: Unpacking the Bubblegum Dance Classic The 1997 single "Barbie Girl" catapulted Aqua to global fame, topping charts and dominating airwaves. But beyond its catchy melody and dance beats, lies a complex web of contradictions and possibilities. This book offers the first in-depth examination of Aqua's debut album Aquarium, tracing its history alongside interpretations informed by queer theory and covers by contemporary musicians. By peeling back the layers, it reveals a confection that is both sweet and subversive, with videos that seem innocuous at first glance but hold unexpected tensions. Through this analysis, readers will gain a new understanding of Aqua's music and its enduring appeal, as well as the cultural context in which it was created.
