Description
The Apocalypse. An Alexandrian World Chronicle by Pseudo-Methodius is a pivotal work in response to the Arab invasions and the establishment of the Muslim empire in the seventh century. This volume contains two texts that traversed the Mediterranean, one of which was translated from Syriac into Greek and then Latin, reflecting its immense popularity throughout the Middle Ages. The Apocalypse enjoyed widespread influence, shaping expectations of the end of the world and informing responses to exotic invaders like the Mongols and Turks. It also contributed to legendary versions of Alexander the Great's life. In addition, an Alexandrian World Chronicle (Excerpta Latina Barbari) was considered significant by humanist Joseph Scaliger, who saw it as a representative of an early stage in the Christian chronicle tradition. This collection presents a universal chronicle with a comprehensive ethnography and geography, along with Euhemeristic narratives of the gods and accounts of Alexander.
