Description

Antipoems: New and Selected by Nicanor Parra is a bilingual collection that reunites Chile's foremost poet with North American readers after thirteen years. The poet's work has evolved in response to the politics of his homeland, taking on a sly hermeticism reminiscent of Italian writers Eugenio Montale and Elio Vittorini during the Fascist regime. This new gathering includes many poems that influenced North American poets such as Ferlinghetti and Merton in the 1950s and 1960s, some in new or revised translations. The collection also features generous selections from Parra's more recent work, including Artifacts (1972), Sermons and Preachings of the Christ of Elqui (1977), and Jokes to Mislead the Police (1983). Edited by David Unger, Antipoems: New and Selected provides a full evaluation of a poet who is "unquestionably one of the most influential and accomplished in Latin America today".
