Description

Antanas Sutkus: In Memoriam by Thomas Schirmböck is a poignant tribute to the Jewish community in Lithuania, whose history was brutally disrupted by the Holocaust. Born into a family that had already witnessed the atrocities of World War II, Antanas Sutkus felt deeply troubled by the events that unfolded in his homeland. This book presents a selection of photographs taken by Sutkus between 1986 and the present day, capturing the faces and stories of those who survived the concentration camps. Through these portraits, we see the complex historical passage of Lithuania's Jewish community, marked by both resilience and tragedy. The photographs are rich in particularity, offering a nuanced understanding of this pivotal period in history. By presenting Sutkus' work, Pro Memoria aims to shed light on a forgotten chapter in Lithuania's cultural heritage, one that has been marked by violence and loss.
