The Great War by Steuart Hare The King's Royal Rifle Corps played a significant role in the Great War, with its sixteen battalions continuously engaged from 1914 to 1918. The Corps saw action on the western front, as well as in Italy, Greece, and Macedonia, and at Murmansk in 1919. The Corps was involved in several key battles, including the retreat to the Marne, the 'Race to the Sea', and the first battle of Ypres. The famous rifle fire of the Corps was so effective that the Germans were deceived into thinking they were up against entrenched machine guns. However, the Corps also suffered significant losses, including the annihilation of three companies of the First Battalion at Ypres. The Corps continued to fight throughout the war, with battalions seeing action at Givenchy, the battles of 2nd Ypres, Aubers Ridge, and Festubert, and later at Loos and throughout the Battle of the Somme. The Corps ultimately played a part in the final allied offensive that brought the Armistice in the autumn of 1918.
