The yard was all silent and empty under the burning afternoon heat, which had made its asphalt springy like turf. Suddenly, children poured out of the great doors at either end of the Sunday-school in two howling streams, boys from the right and girls from the left. The quadrangle quickly filled with clamour and movement as scholars proudly displayed their prize-books to each other and the teachers. Among them was a little girl of twelve years, dressed in a cream-coloured frock with a wide straw hat. She stood quietly kicking her legs against the wall, one hand clutching a prized volume bound in vivid tints. Her eyes would occasionally wander, taking in the surrounding buildings - chapel, school, lecture-hall, and chapel-keeper's house - before returning to the doorway. As she waited for something or someone, her gaze drifted back to the book in her arms, its frontispiece catching her attention with a vague smile of satisfaction.
