Description
Animal Dignity: Philosophical Reflections on Non-Human Existence by Melanie Challenger This collection of essays explores the concept of animal dignity, challenging traditional humanist perspectives and introducing new approaches to understanding non-human animals. Contributions from leading scholars in history, philosophy, science, law, and literature offer a diverse range of insights into the value and worth of non-human existence. From historians to primatologists, philosophers to novelists, these essays collectively make the case for recognizing animal dignity beyond its usual humanist framework. They suggest ways to ensure a flourishing environment in times of ecological destruction and climate breakdown, offering a nuanced understanding of the complex relationships between humans and animals. By bringing together diverse perspectives on animal dignity, this book presents a fruitful way forward for progressive relations between all species.
