AngloModern Painting and Modernity in Britain and the United States by Janet Wolff explores how early twentieth-century art was marginalized by critics and historians. Wolff examines the social, institutional, political, and aesthetic processes that led to the decline of realist and figurative art in the postwar period. She investigates how questions of gender and ethnicity influenced critical, curatorial, and historical evaluations, such as the relegation of artists associated with the Whitney Museum to a secondary status.
