Description

Ancient Battle Formations by Justin Swanton offers a fresh perspective on the organization and function of ancient battle formations. By examining Greek and Latin sources, Swanton reevaluates conventional notions and uncovers surprising conclusions about how these formations were used. The book explores the composition, function, and efficacy of various formations, including heavy and light infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. It also delves into massed infantry tactics, focusing on the Greek hoplite phalanx, the Macedonian pike phalanx, and the Roman triplex acies. A detailed study of these ancient battle formations sheds new light on their organization and operation, challenging long-held assumptions and providing valuable insights for historians and military enthusiasts alike.
