Description

A visual study of the increasing integration of the photographic image and the built environment, Anastasia Samoylova's latest series explores how urban environments across the world are becoming increasingly aligned. She observes how global centers of internationalized money and culture are adopting a generic urban landscape of anonymous steel and glass architecture. This phenomenon is reflected in Samoylova's photographs, which highlight the role photography plays in creating an ideological gap between branded urban identity and lived reality. By examining these images, we can gain insight into our neoliberal era of networked economic markets and networked imagery. Samoylova's work has been shown at museums in Europe and the US, and she is a winner of numerous prizes, including the Fundación MAPFRE's KBr Photo Award (2021). Her photographs are presented here in Image Cities.
