Description

This is the story of Bill Blau's life, from the tumultuous 1930s to his experiences in World War II and beyond. At just 12 years old, he was forced to leave home due to financial hardship, leading him to an orphanage where he struggled to make sense of his world.

As he navigated the challenges of growing up during a time of great turmoil - including anti-Semitism, fascism, and McCarthyism - Bill learned that the unexamined life was not worth living. He went on to serve in the Air Corps, pursue higher education, and build a career marked by diverse experiences and achievements.

This memoir is a candid account of Bill's journey, from his roots in Gary, Indiana, to his time at the University of Chicago and beyond. It offers a unique perspective on one man's struggles and triumphs during some of the most significant events of the 20th century.
