Description

An Octoroon by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins is a thought-provoking play that explores issues of race and identity in America today. Drawing inspiration from Dion Boucicault's 1859 melodrama, the work examines the complexities of slavery and its legacy. The story revolves around Judge Peyton's plantation, Terrebonne, which is facing financial ruin after his death. His nephew George arrives as heir apparent, but quickly falls in love with Zoe, a beautiful 'octoroon'. However, M'Closky has other plans for both Terrebonne and Zoe, leading to a dramatic confrontation. This exhilarating play won the Most Promising Playwright Award at the Evening Standard Awards in 2017 and was also named Most Promising Playwright at the Critics' Circle Awards that same year.
