Description
This unique account of rural life in East Yorkshire reveals the farm servant system that shaped the local economy for men born before 1900. Through extensive research and oral testimony from the 1970s, Stephen Caunce brings to life the lives of boys as young as 13 who worked with heavy horses in teams.
Living in the farmhouse, these young workers would continue this way of life until they married, forming an essential part of national history. The East Riding farming system was surprisingly modern and profitable, paying good wages to its workers. This book tells their stories in their own words, shedding light on a distant way of living and working.
