Description
Barry Gifford's first major collection of short stories offers a diverse range of styles and periods, from absurdist exercises to romantic tales. Spanning from the 1950s to the present day, these stories explore themes of childhood innocence, murder, revenge, and human complexity.
The title story introduces a Japanese-American motel operator who chooses not to give up a stranger, despite police searching for him. Other tales, such as "Room 584, The Starr Hotel" and "The Unspoken", delve into the darker aspects of human nature, while "The Lonely and the Lost" offers a novella that explores the consequences of one's actions.
Throughout this collection, Gifford masterfully balances dark and light, creating complex characters and narratives with no simple endings. Instead, these stories offer happy beginnings, leaving readers to ponder the complexities of human nature.
