Description

Winter 1945. The German army is retreating from the Russian advance, and thousands are fleeing in desperation. Yet, in a rural East Prussian manor house, the von Globig family tries to maintain a sense of normalcy.

The twelve-year-old Peter von Globig feigns illness to avoid his Hitler Youth duties, while his father Eberhard serves a desk job in Italy, safe from the front. His mother Katharina has withdrawn into herself, and the house is run by a conservative aunt, aided by two Ukrainian maids and an energetic Pole.

But when Katharina decides to harbour a stranger for the night, their privileged lifestyle is disrupted, and they are forced to confront the reality of their situation. As the winter darkness closes in, the von Globig family's decisions will have far-reaching consequences.
