Description

Alasdair MacIntyre: An Intellectual Biography presents a comprehensive introduction to the life and work of one of today's leading moral philosophers. Winner of the prestigious Philippe Habert Prize, this biography by Émile Perreau-Saussine offers a critical examination of MacIntyre's thought, now available in English for the first time. Perreau-Saussine guides readers through MacIntyre's lifelong project, tracking his responses to liberalism's limitations and the human search for what is good and true. The portrait that emerges is one of an intellectual giant who opposes modern liberal individualism's focus on averting evil at the expense of a concerted pursuit of human goods. Through Perreau-Saussine's study, MacIntyre's engagement with various theoretical and practical standpoints is convincingly shown, including his early and later abandoned dalliance with Marxism. The author argues that Aristotelian Thomism provides the best resources to counter what he perceives as the failure of the liberal project.
