Description

Air Atlantique: A Unique Aviation Story In 1976, a Jersey-based air taxi operator purchased two elderly Dakota aircraft for cargo charters as Air Atlantique. This marked the beginning of an airline that would eventually operate one of the largest fleets of Dakotas in the world. Over the years, Air Atlantique diversified into passenger charters, pleasure flying, and oil-spill response work, while also taking over a Coventry Airport base. The airline's fleet of historic aircraft went on to participate in air shows around the UK. However, changes were made when the airline's founder Mike Collett was set to retire, leading to a shift towards freight charters and pleasure flying. Despite new regulations bringing an end to passenger flying in the Dakotas, Air Atlantique continued to operate until it eventually opened an aviation museum and visitor centre at Coventry.
