Description
Agent Paterson SOE From Operation Anthropoid to France : the Memoirs of E.H. Van Maurik In 1936, Ernest van Maurik joined the Artists Rifles regiment in the Territorial Army, but his wartime experience took him far beyond the confines of a single unit. Commissioned into the Wiltshire Regiment, he was posted to Folkestone in 1940, where he underwent training at Hythe Small Arms School and became involved with the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Van's work with the SOE led him to Scotland, where he trained Czech soldiers who would later participate in Operation Anthropoid, the assassination of SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich. He then worked for notable figures such as Maurice Buckmaster and General Colin Gubbins at the SOE's headquarters in Baker Street, London. His main task was to get agents into and out of Occupied France, but he soon found himself in the field, undertaking missions in Malta and Switzerland. Van's experiences with the SOE took him on many adventures, from training special forces operatives to working as a courier for F Section. This memoir offers a unique insight into Van's time with the SOE, covering his work in Scotland, France, and beyond.
