Description

A revelation about Europe's complex relationship with blackness, Afropean offers a fresh perspective on identity and belonging. Johny Pitts' journey takes him to unexpected places, from the Cape Verdean shantytown of Lisbon to the predominantly Muslim area of Stockholm.

Through his experiences, Pitts presents Europeans of African descent as lead actors in their own story, forging new identities amidst multiple allegiances. This on-the-ground documentary reveals a continent where blackness is an integral part of European identity, and invites readers to explore alternative maps of the continent.

With its lyrical prose and nuanced exploration of identity, Afropean is a compelling account of the complexities of belonging in Europe today.
