Description

African communities in southern Pakistan have long maintained their cultural traditions despite facing social and economic challenges. This ethnographic study explores the history, society, religion, and daily practices of these communities, known as Shidis, 'black' Baloch, and Khaskhelis.

Approximately 300,000 Afro-Pakistanis live in the country, with their distinct customs shaped by centuries of trans-oceanic migration from East-, Northeast- and Central Africa. Despite being a sizeable minority, they have preserved their African heritage, which significantly contributes to Pakistan's cultural diversity.

This book sheds light on the 'voices' of Afro-Pakistanis, embodied in saints, spirits, songs, and drums that remind them of their distant African roots. It is an important contribution to our understanding of this often overlooked community.
