Description

Alec Soth's Advice for Young Artists is a collection of photographs made during visits to twenty-five undergraduate art programmes across the United States between 2022 and 2024. The work is a reflection on artmaking at different stages of life and the relations of photography, time, and ageing. The photographs range from formal studies to more unruly works of self-expression, featuring ambiguous stagings, found forms, and lyrical portraits. Interspersed with these images are gnomic quotes and unfinished credos scrawled on Post-its. Soth's own presence is also felt throughout the work, appearing at intervals as an uncertain sage among the students. This latest body of work reveals a new expansion of Soth's practice and a new vantage point, twenty years on from the publication of his first book. It uses an instructional format as a spurious cover for introspection and provocation, making it a study of the experience of the young artist as much as a reckoning with the prospect of becoming an old one.
