Description
The Rhine River played a pivotal role in the final stages of World War II. As Allied forces closed in from the west, they faced one major obstacle: the mighty river stretching from the North Sea to Switzerland. The Allies executed a series of large-scale operations to overcome this challenge. In the north, an enormous airdrop was backed up by an amphibious crossing that utilized specialized armor, including the Alligators of 4th Royal Tank Regiment. Meanwhile, in the south, the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen allowed US First Army to create a bridgehead, which they would later use to great effect. As the Allies pushed forward, they encountered remnants of German forces determined to resist for as long as possible. However, these defenders were ultimately no match for the modern equipment and well-trained units that had been rushed to the front in an effort to see action before the war ended.
