Description

The A4 Pacific Locomotives is a comprehensive guide to one of Britain's most iconic steam locomotive designs. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway in the 1930s, these streamlined locomotives not only reflected the art deco and modernist style of the era but were also functional, enabling them to travel efficiently at high speeds. A total of 35 A4 Pacific Locomotives were built between 1935-38, with the first four being painted silver and named after the 'Silver Jubilee' train. Later batches were named after birds, directors, or British empire countries, reflecting the era's love of elegance and refinement. The class achieved several speed records before Mallard broke the world record for a steam locomotive in 1938, a record that remains unbroken. Today, six surviving members of the A4 Pacific Locomotives have been preserved for posterity, with two finding homes in North America. This book offers a detailed look at these remarkable machines, showcasing their design, history, and significance in the world of railways.
