Description

A Stranger in Baghdad by Elizabeth Loudon This novel is a stirring intergenerational drama that explores the struggles of a mother and daughter navigating as outsiders in two different cities. Set against the backdrop of Iraq's tumultuous history, it tells the story of Mona Haddad, an Anglo-Iraqi psychiatrist, and her family's complex past. The book begins with a surprise visit from an old acquaintance to Mona's London office, which sets off a chain of events that uncovers long-buried secrets. As the narrative unfolds, it reveals the intricate web of relationships between Mona's mother Diane, Ibrahim, an ambitious Iraqi doctor, and Duncan, a young British Embassy officer in Baghdad. Through its richly evocative prose, this novel offers a penetrating reflection on cross-cultural marriage, British attitudes towards Iraq, and the lives of women caught between different worlds.
