Description
A Splendid Little War by Derek Robinson
It was 1918 when the war to end all wars seemed imminent. However, just two years later, White Russians were fighting Bolshevik Reds for control of their country, and Winston Churchill wanted to see Communism 'strangled in its cradle'. A volunteer R.A.F. squadron, flying Sopwith Camels, was sent to support the anti-Bolshevik forces.
The British staff officer's description of the conflict as a "splendid little war" seemed ironic at the time. In reality, it was a brutal and attritional conflict marked by incompetence and corruption. The squadron soon found themselves wishing that both sides would lose.
