Description

A Long Day's Evening by Bilge Karasu is set against the backdrop of a pivotal moment in history when the Emperor outlaws all religious paintings and icons. This has far-reaching consequences, including the murder of a palace official and the disruption of monasteries where icon veneration was once a cornerstone of faith. As tensions rise, two men - Andronikos and Ioakim - are forced to confront their own beliefs and loyalties in the face of uncertainty. Their love becomes a source of strength and comfort as they navigate the treacherous landscape of dogma, custom, and law. Karasu's masterful prose weaves together themes of faith, identity, and devotion, creating a rich tapestry that explores the complexities of human experience. With its operatic intensity and nuanced exploration of dualities, A Long Day's Evening is a thought-provoking novel that will appeal to readers interested in literary fiction and historical drama.
