Stephen Spender's life is a vivid snapshot of the twentieth century. This elegant memoir offers an intimate portrait of his extraordinary life, shifting between memoir and biography with new insights drawn from personal recollections and his father's unpublished archives. Spender's story is one of friendship, adventure, and artistic pursuit, as well as secrets and introspection. From his early days at Oxford to his later years in London, this book provides a unique perspective on the life of a poet, a patriot, and a man torn between two worlds. Written by Matthew Spender, Stephen's son, this memoir is a thoughtful exploration of a complex and fascinating individual, and the world he inhabited.
