Description
Hugh MacDiarmid's A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle is widely regarded as a masterpiece of modern Scottish poetry. In this edition, Kenneth Buthlay provides extensive commentary and notes that illuminate MacDiarmid's complex and often opaque use of language. The poem itself is a powerful exploration of Scotland's divided self, the human condition, and personal fears. A jagged and beautiful thistle serves as a potent symbol, reflecting on the fate of the nation and the individual's place within it. This edition offers a nuanced understanding of MacDiarmid's work, making it an ideal choice for readers seeking to engage with his poetry in depth.
