The creatures described in the Guideways were regarded as actual entities found throughout the landscape, used as a sacred geography, guidebook for travelers, and book of omens. Seventy-six rare woodblock engravings from a 1597 edition are reproduced here for the first time, providing a unique glimpse into the Chinese engraver's art during the late Ming dynasty.
