Description
The Wise King: A Christian Prince, Muslim Spain, and the Birth of the Renaissance by Simon R. Doubleday In 13th-century Spain, Alfonso X ruled as both king and philosopher, leaving an indelible mark on Western civilization. Dubbed "the Wise," he was renowned for his sparkling intellect and cultural achievements, which bridged the divide between Christian and Muslim cultures. Alfonso's affinity for Islamic culture had a profound impact on his reign, shaping his pursuit of astronomy and his vision of the world. His engagement with Arabic-speaking culture also influenced his patronage of art, music, literature, and architecture, as seen in his famous Cantigas de Santa María. This biography explores Alfonso's life and times, revealing how his cultural achievements paved the way for the European Renaissance. Through a deep exploration of Alfonso's emotional world, historian Simon R. Doubleday sheds light on the king's ongoing struggles as a ruler and as a man, distilled into sublime works that continue to speak powerfully across the centuries.
