Description
A heart-wrenching and triumphant story about one man's escape from the school-to-prison pipeline. Michael Phillips' journey is a powerful exploration of how he turned his life around, becoming a pastor, education reform advocate, and leader in his community. After facing numerous setbacks, including losing his father, suffering a life-altering car accident, and struggling with addiction, Michael was given a second chance through a special college program. This choice marked the beginning of a mission to help change the system that often fails young Black men like himself. Today, Michael is a thriving church pastor, local leader, and member of the Maryland State Board of Education. Armed with his powerful story and research, Michael tackles the embedded privilege in the education system, introducing ideas for change that could level the playing field and reduce negative impacts on vulnerable youth. He invites readers to speak into young kids' lives, providing resources and advocating for students.
