Description
Janice Okoh's play explores two lives intertwined by their connection to Queen Victoria. In 1862, one Sarah is an African girl adopted into the royal family, while in the present day, another Sarah navigates life as a black middle-class woman in a Cheshire village.
A chance encounter between these two Sarahs leads to a surprising meeting with the Queen, where the boundaries of identity, culture and belonging are put to the test. This thought-provoking play delves into themes of imperialism, cross-racial adoption and cultural appropriation, all set against the backdrop of a traditional English tea party.
First performed at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry in 2020, The Gift has since been seen on tour across the UK, including a run at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London. A co-production between Eclipse Theatre Company and the Belgrade Theatre, it was directed by Dawn Walton.
