Description
The Clouds by Aristophanes is a comedy play that satirizes intellectual fashions in ancient Athens. Originally performed at the City Dionysia in 423 BC, it was not well received and came last of the three plays competing at the festival that year. Despite its initial failure, The Clouds underwent revisions between 420-417 BC and was circulated in manuscript form. This revised version is an incomplete form of Old Comedy, but its incompleteness is not immediately apparent in translations and modern performances. Today, it is considered one of the finest examples of the genre and a pioneering work in the "comedy of ideas". The play tells the story of Strepsiades, who seeks help from his son Pheidippides to escape debt. However, Pheidippides is reluctant to get involved, preferring to pursue his interest in horses instead of attending The Thinkery, a school for young men deemed unworthy by society.
