Description

The Baker's Dozen by Heather Forest In Colonial America, a greedy baker named Van Amsterdam is known for his high-quality St. Nicholas cookies. However, his desire for wealth leads him to cut corners and sell people short of quality cookies. A strange encounter with an old woman changes everything. The old woman curses the baker, causing his business to decline, but she returns for another dozen cookies, expecting 13. This time, Van Amsterdam gives her extra measure, teaching him a valuable lesson about fairness and kindness. The story behind this custom of offering 13 items instead of 12 spreads throughout the colonies, showing that customers respect those who are trustworthy and selfless. This holiday tale is perfect for learning about the importance of giving, humbleness, and treating others fairly.
