Description
Tactical Air Command was the largest of the USAF's major Cold War combatant commands. Formed in 1946 and headquartered at Langley AFB, Virginia, it operated a huge range of aircraft over the following 46 years until its inactivation in 1992. During this period, TAC played a significant part in several key conflicts, including the Korean War, the Cuban missile crisis, and the wars in Southeast Asia and the Gulf in 1991. The command's capabilities evolved significantly, with jet aircraft operations introduced in the late 1940s and a wide range of tactical fighters, ground attack fighters, light bombers, and special mission aircraft coming into service. By the 1980s, TAC had become a highly capable force, with a diverse fleet of aircraft including the F-84, F-100, F-105, A-7, F-111, F-4, A-10, F-15, and F-16. The command's deployment capability was also strengthened under the leadership of General Wilbur 'Bill' Creech from 1978 to 1984, enabling it to respond quickly to crises in Europe and other regions.
