Description

Beatrice Searle's memoir is a captivating blend of exploration, personal journey and geological insight. At 26, she embarked on a 500-mile trek through Southern Norway, carrying a 40-kilo stone from the West coast of Orkney that had become a talisman during her masonry training.

As she walked along medieval pilgrim paths, Searle's stone became an offering to those she met, symbolising weight and motion, resilience and homecoming. Along the way, she reflects on the mysterious footprint stones of Scandinavia, Northern Europe and the ancient Greco-Roman world, closely associated with travelers, saints and the inauguration of Kings.

This unusual adventure story weaves together themes of love, faith, practicality and spirituality, inviting readers to consider what lessons might be learned from stone, what we choose to carry with us and what we return to put down or pick up again.
