Description
Simulating Good and Evil: A Critical Examination of Videogames and Morality. The moral panic surrounding violent videogames is often politically motivated, but games themselves are morally important. Decades of research claiming to show that videogames are immoral have failed to produce convincing evidence. Instead, games offer a unique space for players to experiment with moral reasoning strategies without real-world consequences. Videogames can simulate decisions that would carry significant moral weight in the real world, making them valuable tools for exploring complex issues. However, not all upsetting or offensive content within games is inherently problematic. A nuanced understanding of such content requires applying existing theories for evaluating political ideologies and speech. By examining videogames through a critical lens, we can better understand their role in shaping our moral values and decision-making processes.
