Description
The Gulf States were expected to remain untouched by the Arab Spring. Instead, Toby Matthiesen reveals a very different picture in Sectarian Gulf. This book offers the first assessment of the Arab Spring across the region, drawing on first-hand accounts from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Matthiesen tells the story of the early protests, highlighting how regimes quickly suppressed these movements. The author shows how relations between the Gulf regimes and their Shia citizens have soured to levels similar to those in 1979, following the Iranian revolution. Since the crackdown on protesters in Bahrain in mid-March 2011, the "Shia threat" has become a key response to demands for democratic reform and accountability. The consequences of this strategy are dire, warns Matthiesen. The social fabric of the Gulf States, the rise of transnational Islamist networks, and the future of the Middle East all hang in the balance.
