Description
This book examines the underlying assumptions and implications of how we conceptualise and investigate poverty. It explores research initiatives that have used mixed method approaches to poverty analysis, known as Q-Squared (Q²) methods.
The Q² literature highlights the range of analytical tools within the social sciences that can be used to understand and explain social phenomena. By examining these methods, this book probes issues about knowledge claims made in poverty debates, including how we identify who is poor and why they are poor.
It argues for methodological pluralism, suggesting that knowledge is partial and empirical adjudication is imperfect. The book makes a case for combining different research methods to better understand and explain social phenomena, with the goal of choosing the most suitable approach based on the research question rather than the other way around.
