Pilot Impostor is a striking collection of prose and images that draws inspiration from two unexpected sources: the poetry of Fernando Pessoa and the history of air disasters. Author James Hannaham explores themes of con men, identity politics, failures of leadership, privilege, ineptitude, the slave trade, and the nature of consciousness.
After reading Pessoa & Co., Richard Zenith's English translation of selected poetry by Fernando Pessoa, on a plane from Cape Verde to Lisbon in 2017, Hannaham became fascinated with Pessoa's work. He began a practice of responding to poems with his own writing, which eventually made its way into the book.
Other influences, including Air Disasters and the cityscapes of Lisbon, also seeped into the collection, adding texture and depth to Hannaham's exploration of complex ideas.
