Description
Narrating Reality offers a provocative critique of nineteenth-century British realist fiction and our understanding of it. Harry E. Shaw challenges the prevailing critical orthodoxy by re-examining the role of the narrator in realist novels. Shaw draws on the work of thinkers such as Erich Auerbach, Jürgen Habermas, and J. L. Austin to argue that realist novels do not aim to replicate the world or offer transparent access to it, but rather engage readers in a process of narrative understanding that can grasp the complexities of life in history. In this new light, the works of novelists such as Sir Walter Scott, Jane Austen, and George Eliot gain renewed interest.
