Description

Giuseppe Mazzini was a leading figure in nineteenth-century European politics. His ideas about nationalism and democracy had a significant impact on the continent. Despite his influence, much of his life and work remained unexplored until now. Denis Mack Smith's biography sheds new light on Mazzini's thoughts and relationships with prominent thinkers of the time, including Marx, Carlyle, Mill, and Bakunin. The book reveals Mazzini as a complex figure who both inspired admiration and animosity, yet left an enduring mark on his era. Through extensive archival research, Smith recreates Mazzini's life in London and explores his vision for a European community. This fresh perspective offers a deeper understanding of Mazzini's legacy and its continued relevance today.
