John Travers Cornwell, known to his nation as 'Boy Jack' Cornwell, was a hero of World War I. At just 16 years old, he served as the sight-setter for the HMS Chester's forward six-inch gun.
On May 31st 1916, the HMS Chester engaged the German High Seas Fleet in the Battle of Jutland. In the ensuing storm of shot and shell, Cornwell's ten-man gun crew was decimated, with only two surviving. Despite being mortally wounded, he remained at his post until further orders.
His bravery and quiet courage were recognised by his Captain, who reported his actions to Admiral Sir David Beatty. As a result, Cornwell was awarded the Victoria Cross, one of the youngest-ever recipients of Britain's highest award for gallantry. This book tells his remarkable story in the glowingly admiring tones of the time.
