Description
The Iron Age by Arja Kajermo is a darkly funny debut that weaves together folk tales and traditional customs with economic reality. Set against the backdrop of rural Finland and urban Stockholm, this novel explores the complexities of family life through the eyes of a mute but watchful girl. As her family crosses from one home to another, their stories and fables take on new meanings in the face of economic hardship. With illustrations throughout, Kajermo's unique voice brings together the clash of traditional ways with modern reality, creating a vivid picture of life in Finland and Sweden. Through its characters' experiences, The Iron Age offers a nuanced exploration of family dynamics, violence, and resilience, set against the stark beauty of the Finnish landscape.
