Description

A searing satire by one of the most important African-American novelists of the twentieth century, Dem explores the abiding racism and legacy of slavery on the psyche of white America. Mitchell Pierce's life is marked by an unfulfilling marriage and estrangement from his son, but when a young man appears at his doorstep, everything changes. The arrival of Cooley, a black maid's date, sparks a quest for Mitchell to find out who he is and take responsibility for the twins born as a result of superfecundation. This modern-day fable inverts the history of miscegenation and subjugation of African Americans, turning the tables on the white oppressor. Dem is a powerful exploration of racism, identity, and the complexities of human relationships, written by William Melvin Kelley in 2021.
