Description
Dark Borders explores the intersection of American film noir and anxieties about citizenship in midcentury America. Jonathan Auerbach examines over a dozen dark crime thrillers, tracing their connections to U.S. national security measures from the 1930s to the 1950s. These films often blurred boundaries between inside and outside, as foreigners took on domestic space. The sense of dispossession intensified by wartime and Cold War security measures is reflected in these movies, which frequently featured characters feeling like strangers in their own homes. By considering politics and aesthetics together, Auerbach sheds light on the fear that "un-American" foes lurked within the homeland. Auerbach's analysis covers well-known films such as Double Indemnity and Out of the Past, as well as lesser-known noirs like Stranger on the Third Floor and Ride the Pink Horse.
