Cleopatra Dismounts A Novel by Carmen Boullosa tells three versions of her life. In one account, Cleopatra is left alone after Marc Antony's death and castsigates Octavian for betraying her. However, this story is not true to the woman who truly lived. In another version, Cleopatra recounts how she was delivered to Caesar in a carpet roll and bore his child, as well as the twins and third child she had with Marc Antony. Diomedes, an informer and her official chronicler, intercedes, revealing that he altered the histories of her reign and destroyed her scrolls. Cleopatra's story begins with her flight from Pompey, who was placed in charge after her father's death. She sneaks out of the palace with servants and gladiators, leaving behind a wagon with the words "Queen of Kings" carved into its boards.
