Description

The Class 58 Locomotives A unique and significant departure from normal build standards, the fifty Class 58 locomotives were introduced in 1983. Built by BREL at Doncaster Works to a modular design, they featured a Ruston Paxman 12RK3ACT prime mover, well-suited for their main use on merry-go-round coal traffic. Despite their innovative design, the class encountered issues with wheelslip and ultimately met an early retirement in the UK, as the Canadian-built Class 66s took over. However, this book pays tribute to the entire class through a collection of period photographs and detailed captions, providing a fascinating insight into these often-overlooked locomotives. With only one member physically preserved, Andrew Cole's book offers a rare opportunity to learn about this interesting class of locomotive, which played an important role in the UK's rail network.
