Description

The Chinchaga Firestorm: When the Moon and Sun Turned Blue In 1950, one of North America's largest firestorms burned an area of over 3.5 million acres in northern Alberta and British Columbia, creating the world's largest smoke layer in the atmosphere. The resulting haze was visible around the world, causing the moon and sun to appear blue. This historical study examines the effects of fire on ecological processes, using technical explanations and archival discoveries to illustrate both the beneficial and destructive aspects of forest fires. The author draws on the 2011 devastation of Slave Lake, Alberta, to highlight the impact of these events on communities and individuals. The Chinchaga Firestorm will appeal to those interested in wildland fire science, forestry, ecology, and western Canadian history. Foreword by Mike Flannigan.
