Charlie Chaplin's voice is heard in French Indochina. In 1936, the silent film star and his co-star Paulette Goddard are on vacation in Asia following the release of Modern Times. While evading the press in Phnom Penh, Chaplin finds inspiration for a new film idea - imagining his iconic alter ego, the Tramp, in colonial rubber plantations. However, Chaplin's presence in the French protectorate has encouraged Cambodians to speak out against colonial exploitation, and authorities are nervous about his visit. As he grapples with his creativity and conscience, a deepening friendship with a Cambodian comic actor and anti-colonial communist forces him to choose between lending his celebrity status to their cause or keeping silent. This novel is fictionalised around real events and explores how an embittered Charlie Chaplin abandons his silent Tramp in order to find his own voice in the turbulent 1930s.
